Introduction
Bioinformatics is a bridge science connecting biology, medicine, computer science, data science, statistics, and many more. It touches upon all areas of biomedical research, and beyond data processing, analysis, and integration, the field is also concerned with data sharing, privacy protection, and the impact of modern machine-learning approaches. As a PhD student engaging with bioinformatics on any level, it is important to learn how to navigate the vast amount of literature available and how to dissect papers. In this journal club, we will cover a wide array of different topics. We will address general scientific questions and consider the latest advances and emerging fields, balanced with general research questions about bioinformatics. The target audience is PhD students who either work in bioinformatics or apply it regularly.
Rules
- Register via TUMonline for the Journal Club. If you are not enrolled, please register by sending an email to markus.list@tum.de.
- Sign up for a presentation slot: Bioinformatics Journal Club_Papers.xlsx. This Excel document also contains suggestions for interesting publications. However, if you would like to propose a different paper, please briefly contact me via email or Teams.
- Make sure to send an email to bioinfo-journal-club@list.ls.tum.de at least one week in advance. This gives everyone sufficient time to read the paper to be discussed. Ideally, you should attach the PDF of the paper to your email to the mailing list.
- Prepare a presentation in a format of your choice. The presentation should aim for 15–20 minutes and should not exceed 30 minutes.
Certification by the Graduate School
Doctoral candidates are required to complete 6 SWS of qualification activities, corresponding to a total of 63 hours.
To receive a certificate, regular attendance (documented via signatures) as well as one presentation and one manuscript review are mandatory. Please ensure that you collect a signature each time you attend; signatures can only be obtained through consistent participation.
To certify the hours completed in the Journal Club through the Graduate School, a corresponding form will be provided at the end of the Journal Club.
