Objectives
Students should learn to apply the theoretical knowledge gained in the lecture general Microbiology in the laboratory. Basics of sterile microbiological techniques as well as diagnostics should be mastered, as well as basic microscopical capabilities. The latter will introduce the students to a variety of microbial cell forms. In general, students shall get a first impression of the interaction of microbes with different artificial and natural habitats.
Description
1. Methods to culture and enumerate microbes (counting particles/ viable cells)
2. Differentiation of bacteria (morphology, cell wall, growth, metabolism)
3. Isolation of microbes (enteric and coliform bacteria, spore forming bacteria, molds and yeasts, clostridiae, bioluminescent bacteria, multiresistent strains)
4. Methods to identify microbes (biochemical identification, immunological differentiation)
5. Bacteriophages (Isolation, Transduction, Luria-Delbrück fluctuation test)
