Cold Showers: What Science Says — Insights on BR Abendschau
16 Oct 2025
Cold showers are often touted for their health benefits, including claims of boosting the immune system. But what does the scientific evidence actually say? Professor Dr. Alexander Bartelt from the Else Kröner Fresenius Center for Nutritional Medicine (EKFZ) at TUM shared his insights on BR Abendschau, discussing the evidence behind common claims and what cold exposure can do for our health.
Alba Wins Best Poster at the ELC Meeting
11 Sept 2025
Big congratulations to our PhD student Alba Mena Gómez, who won the Best Poster Presentation Award at this year’s European Lipoprotein Club (ELC) Scientific Meeting in Tutzing! Her poster, “Lipid droplet composition and dynamics are key regulators of lipid ROS-induced ferroptosis,” impressed the jury and sparked great discussions.
The ELC meeting, now in its 49th edition, took place September 8–11 at the Evangelische Akademie in Tutzing, Germany. It brought together scientists from across the globe working on lipids, lipoproteins, and lipid-related diseases, with a lively mix of talks and poster presentations from both senior researchers and graduate students.
Celebrating 20 Years of the Else Kröner Fresenius Center for Nutritional Medicine
17 Jul 2025
The Else Kröner Fresenius Center for Nutritional Medicine at TUM celebrated its 20th anniversary on July 17, highlighting two decades of bridging nutritional science and clinical medicine. At the event, leading researchers outlined the center’s future vision of advancing translational research and improving patient care in nutrition-related diseases. We are excited to now be part of this mission and look forward to contributing to the next chapter of EKFZ.
Prof. Bartelt joins ZEIT FORUM Gesundheit to discuss fasting and longevity
20 Mar 2025
Prof. Bartelt recently took part in the ZEIT FORUM Gesundheit panel discussion on the science of fasting and its potential effects on health and lifespan. Held in Berlin and livestreamed on March 20, 2025, the event explored common fasting claims, metabolic impacts, and the latest scientific findings.
New paper on the impact of intermittent fasting in beta-cell maturation
25 Feb 2025
We are pleased to announce that our latest study has been published in Cell Reports. Our research demonstrates that chronic intermittent fasting impairs beta-cell maturation and function in pre-pubertal mice. This study was led by our co-shared Postdoctoral Researcher Leonardo Matta, under the supervision of Prof. Bartelt and Prof. Herzig at the Helmholtz Institute for Diabetes and Cancer.
Matta, L., Weber, P., Erener, S., Walth-Hummel, A., Hass, D., Bühler, L. K., Klepac, K., Szendroedi, J., Guerra, J., Rohm, M., Sterr, M., Lickert, H., Bartelt, A., & Herzig, S. (2025). Chronic intermittent fasting impairs β cell maturation and function in adolescent mice. Cell reports
New paper on oxidative stress and how protein recycling protects against cell death
15 Oct 2024
We are excited to share that our latest research has been published in Cell Death and Differentiation. Our study reveals that activating the NFE2L1-ubiquitin-proteasome system via DDI2 plays a crucial role in protecting against ferroptosis, a form of cell death.
Ofoghi, A., Kotschi, S., Lemmer, I. L., Haas, D. T., Willemsen, N., Bayer, B., Jung, A. S., Möller, S., Haberecht-Müller, S., Krüger, E., Krahmer, N., & Bartelt, A. (2024). Activating the NFE2L1-ubiquitin-proteasome system by DDI2 protects from ferroptosis. Cell death and differentiation
New paper on IF1 in brown fat and thermogenesis
16 Sept 2024
We are excited to share that our latest research has been published in EMBO journal. Our research uncovers a novel mechanism that increases respiration and metabolic activity in brown adipocytes.
