On Mouse Day, we introduced bioinformatics to a very young audience, focusing in particular on decoding the building blocks of life and their functions. The basic structure of DNA was clearly illustrated by building DNA helices out of gummy bears. The folding possibilities of amino acid chains into peptides and proteins were also tangibly demonstrated using coloured popcorn kernels.
Many children designed bracelets and necklaces with their names or encrypted messages in amino acid code. Offered by Ayla Schröder, Armin Soleymaniniya, Tolga Tabanli and Malte Weyrich with Prof. Markus List and Prof. Mathias Wilhelm.
